Since their services became free of charge last year, they have seen a huge increase in demand but the national centre in Bristol cannot cope. But they cannot do this without developing a DVD, which costs £24,000.

Giving Mums A Helping Hand

Green People got a surprise visit from our very own Gemma and new baby Rafferty this week! Amongst the cuddles we were able to find out how she is getting on with motherhood and how she is enjoying the Organic Babies Range.

At this time of lower humidity, with less water carried in the air, cold and often windy days add new challenges to your skin.

All heating creates a dry air environment - with central heating at home being the main culprit, alongside other heating at the office, in the car or on public transport. Your skin is sensitive to seasonal changes and will become drier, requiring ever more moisture to stay soft and healthy.

To solve this, seek out richer products, look for a natural plant oil base (which doesn’t clog pores) and to hold moisture. Any ingredients with good humectant properties will draw moisture into your skin. AVOID avoid Ethyl Alcohol as this is extra-drying, and steer clear of Petrochemicals, artificial Fragrances and Colours, because they will further sensitise skin that is already stressed by the cold.

3 easy tips for Autumn

1 - Avoid very hot baths however tempting it might be to jump into a scalding hot bath after a long cold day, the intense heat of a hot shower or bath actually breaks down the lipid barriers in the skin, which can lead to a loss of moisture. Keep clear of bathing products that contain synthetic chemicals and artificial fragrances

2 - Stay hydrated! continue to drink lots of water and minimise dehydration by avoiding too much alcohol and/or caffeine.

As summer comes to a close, The Daily Mail magazine polled beauty writers and social commentators about the ‘remorseless’ march of year-round, sunkissed glamour in the piece ‘Fake tan: how did it become the new normal?’ The article (accompanied by pics of Cheryl, Katie and Simon et al) claims that fake tan's move into the mainstream is now complete!

A summer survey of British 16 to 24-year-olds also found that 20% never apply suncream while abroad, and 40% would be disappointed to come back from holiday without a tan. Equally, health concerns amongst other groups means that high-factor suncream is selling better than ever, with a tan just as likely to come out of an indoor bottle than from outdoor exposure to ultraviolet rays.

• Sodium lauryl sulphate – from engine degreaser to male skincare! This nasty is found in shampoos, body-washes and toothpastes. It strips oils from the skin which can cause irritation. It also allows chemicals to reach the blood stream - fairly eye opening, this one.

Organic Monitor have assessed over 50 international brands of natural cosmetic products, and ranked them, according to trade news sources. Brands that have received high naturalness scores include Green People (8). These new findings reassert that Green People are living up to their marketing claims (we are glad to hear it - thanks!)

In the recent study, a chemist examined product composition and grouped the ingredient formulations according to their "level of naturalness." Certified organic cosmetics received the highest rating (9-10), pure natural cosmetics got 5-7 ratings, and naturally inspired cosmetics got 2 rating, whilst conventional cosmetics only got 1 rating.

Less rosily, the findings also confirm that most natural brands are not meeting their marketing claims. Many companies claiming to have "chemically-clean" cosmetics actually are falling foul - by including contentious, synthetic ingredients. Many are classified as semi-natural or naturally inspired, and even claim to be "100% natural."

Some organic cosmetic brands are also given low "naturalness" ratings; although their products contain certified organic ingredients, this is notweworthy because some lesser formulations have synthetic ingredients added in... not good!

About the key active ingredients:

Green People and Chestnut Tree House

Chestnut Tree House is the only children's hospice in Sussex.

Completed in 2003, the hospice provides a 'home from home' for children and young adults with progressive, life-limiting or life-threatening illnesses.

They offer support for the whole family (spanning psychological support, care in bereavement therapy, end of life and respite care and sibling support), and families are not charged for their care. The hospice receives very little government funding, so it relies on the generosity, help and support of the people of Sussex.

The hospice costs £2.5 million per year to run;

On site there are 10 children's bedrooms plus 8 family rooms, a wet and dry play area, computer and music rooms, a multi sensory room and hydrotherapy pool. There are potentially 400 families with life-limited children in Sussex. And as we all keep hearing in this weeks news, four in ten Brits have a propensity to Cancer in the coming years.

Tips for Rosacea skin types

Rosacea is a chronic condition that can occur in middle-age.

Rosacea is sometimes referred to as ‘adult acne’. Your face becomes flushed and red due to dilation of the small blood vessels close to the skin surface.
It is often accompanied with severe dryness and irritation around the chin, cheeks, nose and forehead.

You might also experience red spots and pustules which are dome-shaped rather than pointed (there are generally no blackheads, whiteheads or lumps).

If you suffer from rosacea your skin is likely to react to changes in temperature and ingredients such as fragrances, alcohol (ethanol/ethyl alcohol) and fruit acids used in skin care products.

You may also have problems with your digestion and certain foods such as spicy meals, coffee and oranges often trigger the condition. Rosacea can also be triggered by small amounts of alcohol – especially port and spirits.

What to avoid: foods
• Avoid steaming hot soup, coffee, spicy nachos and alcohol. Stay away from ‘hot’ spices such as white and black pepper, paprika, red pepper and cayenne. Some rosacea sufferers have reported a wide variety of foods that trigger flare-ups, examples are cheese, sour cream, yogurt, citrus fruit, liver, chocolate, vanilla, soy sauce, yeast extract, vinegar, aubergines, avocados, spinach, broad-leafed beans and pods, and foods high in histamine or niacin.

What you can do: care for your skin

Organic ingredient levels in the news

For better, or worse organic personal care is in the news again.
As the Daily Mail reported this week, an environmental group has filed a lawsuit against 26 cosmetic companies over claims that products are falsely labelled as 'organic'.

Why does this matter?
Well, no consumer likes being misled, especially so in these straightened economic times. With mid premium products, price is not always a decisive factor with purchasing, the whole brand ethos and easy provenance of ingredients matter much more to customers.

We are pleased our labelling is so transparent
Correct packaging and presentation can raise consumer expectations and reassure, but when unscrupulous brands are caught 'greenwashing' their offerings, or implying a greater natural or organic benefit than the actual contents deliver, then a collective rejection isn't so unexpected.

The Center for Environmental Health's US lawsuit alleges that dozens of questionable products (including shampoos and face washes) do not contain enough organic ingredients to warrant their labels. A case was filed at Alameda County Superior Court last week that relates to a Californian law requiring all organic products to contain at least 70 per cent natural ingredients (grown without pesticides or chemicals).

Legal disputes over organic labelling initially targeted food growers, in 2007. By 2008, cosmetic products claiming to have organic ingredients were also targeted. None of these lawsuits have been resolved yet and the federal government does not have organic labelling rules for cosmetic products. But the U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved California standards (which is a start ...).

CEH are suing the various makers, and dozens of culprits are also highlighted. Their executive director, Michael Green, says:

'For years, organic advocates have called on personal care companies to fix their improper 'organic' labels, but our recent purchasing shows the industry is still rife with unsubstantiated organic claims.'

Sun Protection Factors - in the news

A recent article by Dr Ike Iheanacho, the editor of The Drug and Therapeutics Bulletin advises people that they should use sun lotions offering a minimum SPF30. This was covered in The Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph, with claims that this is necessary because people do not apply sufficient sun lotion in order to achieve the claimed protection on the product.

Dr Iheanacho goes on to say that because of the reduced rate of application used by most people they are getting just half of the claimed protection. (In fact, this is an overestimation of the protection that under-applying sun lotions will give. Applying half the recommended amount of sun lotion will only give protection equal to the square root of the claimed SPF level. This means that applying half the recommended amount of an SPF15 product will only give approximately SPF4 protection, whilst half the amount of SPF30 will only give approximately SPF5½. As you can see from these figures, the difference in protection level between these two products is minimal.)

Sun Protection Factors - what to do?
It is important to urge sun bathers and everyone outdoors in hot conditions to use sufficient sun lotion! 30ml or a shot-glass-full will be required to cover the entire adult body.

At this level, an SPF15 sun lotion will filter out 93% of UVB rays, and SPF25 will filter out 96% of UVB.

People should also reapply every 2 to 3 hours and always after swimming or profuse sweating in order to maintain protection.

NICE (The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) published guidance in January advising people to use a broad spectrum sun lotion with at least SPF15 protection – we agree with this advice, and have cited similar recommendations in customer eNews and our Sun leaflets.
